Perhaps you're asleep. Perhaps you're walking through a door. Maybe you've just closed your eyes for a moment, maybe you're daydreaming, maybe you're not paying attention, maybe even you've just died. However it happens, it happens. You take that step through, you open your eyes, you look around. And you're not where you were a moment ago.
Welcome to the Network.
Right now, you'll find yourself in a hospital room. Something seems to be missing, though. Maybe it's the lack of that distinctive hospital smell, or the fact that there's no beeping machines. In fact, other than a bed and the small table next to it, there's nothing in the room. Or maybe that's not it at all. Maybe it's that you don't have a chart at the end of your bed. Or that there doesn't seem to be any doctors and nurses walking around, and you're free to get up and roam as you please. You'll even see, once you leave your personal room, that you're not the only one. Some of the rooms you pass seem normal enough as you walk down the hall. More private rooms, some comfortable-looking waiting rooms. Even an abandoned nurses' station, and signs pointing to the cafeteria on the ground floor. Except -- wait, was that really a gym you just passed? A computer lab? A theater?
Don't worry, you'll get used to it. You'll have to. The Network doesn't give you much of a choice.
If you're observant, you might have noticed the device on the table in your room when you first arrived. If not, it will be beeping and flashing by the time you get back. That's your communication device. Take a look -- the Network's probably said hello by now. If you're very lucky, she'll have given you more than the standard form letter. Then again.... Maybe it's not so lucky. You never know what sort of mood she's in. But if you get her in a good mood, you'll like the Network. Provided she likes you. There's always consequences for making her angry.
Sometimes the Network has problems, though. Usually, it's not much to worry about. Sometimes the glitches can even be fun. And sometimes.... Well, we don't talk about those times. She doesn't like to remember them.
But glitches aside, the Network's not a bad place to be. A little odd, but it could be worse. There are some things to watch out for. People you know may not know you. Even if they do, things that happened to you might not have happened to them yet. And sometimes you're on the recieving end of it. And sometimes familiar people aren't so familiar after all. You might even end up meeting yourself, though that depends on what your definition of yourself is. She'll never have the same person in her twice, the Network, but sometimes it's pretty close.
Oh, one more thing. Someday, maybe when you're still adjusting, or maybe after you've gotten used to the Network, you might find you fall asleep. Or you walk through a doorway. Or you close your eyes, or get lost in a daydream. And then you wake up, you look around, you step forward.... And you're right back where you were before. If you're lucky, you might be allowed to walk out the exit door when you feel like it, instead of when the Network does. If you're very lucky, you might not lose the exit door at all while you're in the Network. Just don't be surprised if nobody else can see it.
Enjoy your stay.
